Small antenna - huge effect!
ExtendAir Direct was developed to offer optimal field strength even to devices well outside the standard range of the Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station.
Dr. Bott's ExtendAIR Direct is the only Apple-certified external antenna that expands the range of Apple's AirPort Extreme Base Station (antenna port require d) to 500 m (150 ft.).
After a successful debut in North America (Best of Show at MacWorld Expo January 2003) ExtendAir Direct also passed the tighter certification in the European Community, without reducing performance significantly.
ExtendAIR was developed to provide the maximum range for AirPort clients while maintaining the typical Apple look and feel. Installation and use are as simple as "plug in and works".
The additional performance is available immediately after a restart of the base station, no changes are require d on client computers. The antenna is recognized by the base station and listed in the administration software.
The additional performance is available to both the newer 802.11g clients (54 MBit) and traditional 802.11b clients (11 MBit) - ExtendAir Direct amplifies both signals independently of each other, working as a 2-element diversity antenna with + 6.5 dBi.
The new Power Macintosh G5 has an antenna port on the back of the case. Swapping the standard T-shaped AirPort antenna for an ExtendAir Direct (or its omnidirectional cousin, the ExtendAir Omni) enables the computer to access base stations that are further away or permits remote clients to use the G5 as a software basestation from a greater distance.
ExtendAir Direct helps create a good field for roaming or bridging, even where the built-in antennas do not reach.
The combination of antenna and the AirPort Extreme Base Station's bridge mode enables new applications that were not accessible to WLAN access points before.
Linking two remote parts of a corporate network that are seperated by a busy road is child's play. The directional beam created by ExtendAir direct focusses the field where it is needed, without opening unnecessarily large areas.
Mounting the antenna is easy, too. The antenna base stands solidly on a desk or can be attached to a wall or roof with the included mounting accessories. A joint allows for flexible orientation of the actual antenna in the require d direction, enabling both easy targeting and reliable conservation of the ideal orientation.
Applications are plentiful:
Home
ExtendAIR Direct is perfect for the home user who wants to activate "dark" spots in and around their home. ExtendAIR can also help compensate for poor reception due to environmental factors or allow a stationary Power Mac G5 to serve as a software base station for notebooks.
Office
ExtendAIR allows businesses of all sizes to get the most out of their AirPort Extreme Base Station. ExtendAIR ensures the best reception for AirPort clients in remote or outlying parts of the company and even enables connections across busy roads that would require leased lines or expensive construction for a fixed line.
Campus
ExtendAIR Direct can be used to provide wireless coverage over great distances. For special events a couple of base stations with ExtendAIR Direct and a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for each one can create a link over several hundred metres (well in excess of 1000 ft.). Or one can combine ExtendAIR Direct and ExtendAIR Omni to create a network of hot spots wherever people congregate on campus.
For the technically inclined:
Dr. Bott's ExtendAIR Direct is a +6.5 dBi directional antenna that provides directional coverage with 2-element diversity in a cone of 70° originating at the center of the antenna.
*Performance numbers are for typical use, range may vary with site conditions. Typically 11 Mbit/s are maintained at 150 m from the AirPort Extreme base station - more than 20 times the range of 11 Mbit/s connections in the original AirPort Base Station. Note that 802.11g compatible products must be used in order to obtain these speeds. 802.11b range will also be extended, with unchanged transfer rates.
